More on NY

Yesterday, Dave and I went out to City Island to eat fried food and watch some boats. We took the 6 train all the way to the end of the line, and then the Bx29 all the way to the end of its line. Then we went to the Mets/Yankees game. We lasted 5 innings, and then took the train back to the hotel and watched the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings on ESPN. Randy Johnson pitched. I thought the game would be a win-win for me because if NYY won then "yay for Randy Johnson" and if NYM won then the Yankees lost, but that wasn't enough to keep my attention from the bleachers. Final score: NYM 4, NYY 5. I have a whole new appreciation for Safeco field now.

New York Photos

I'm putting our New York photos here as we go, and I'll collect them into a more organized set when we get back to Seattle.

In New York

We got to New York after a long night of flying, but still arrived too early to get into the hotel. So we checked our bags and sought out a Starbucks ... we walked FOUR BLOCKS?!?!?!?! That's a long way to get to a Starbucks, there must be one closer. Then, we took the 6 train up to Laurel's friend Greg's apartment and had some lunch. Now we are in the hotel, and I see Laurel has fallen asleep already, as will I soon.

But first, some may ask, "Why is it called New York? Is there an old York?" The astounding answer may surprise you: Yes!

To New York (slowly)

We're sitting in the airport waiting for our flight to New York ... we took the bus (always a freakshow once you hit Burien) and now have to wait for a one-hour flight delay. We'll end up in NYC around 7 a.m. Eastern Time.

I finally beat Luxor. Warning! Do NOT download this game if you value your time and sanity. MAN it is addictive (just ask my Mum and Laurel!)

Stupid Human Tricks

So, we're going to New York next week. I figured we could try to see a TV show being taped. In order, we tried "The Daily Show" (no tickets until next year); Conan O'Brien (he's not taping next week); and finally, David Letterman.

I haven't watched Letterman in years, but figured it would be fun to watch a live taping. I put in an online application and forgot about it.

Today, though, I got a call from a woman who said she was with the Letterman show! She said, here is a number. Call it and answer a trivia question to win tickets to the show. I thought that maybe this was a joke.

But no, sure enough, I called the number and it was the Letterman show. They asked me a trivia question, which I couldn't answer because it was about the current show.

The question: In the segment "Will It Float" there are two women by the water. What do they do?

I said, "Are they models?" She said no, and that was it, I lost the tickets. She offered to give me information for the stand-by line, but I don't care that much about seeing the show.

The answer, by the way was, "grinder girl and hula girl." It turns out, though, that there ARE models, too -- so technically, I was right!!! Whatever.

Pictures from the Brewfest

We went to the Northwest Brewfest to celebrate Father's Day in honor of our friend David Hale. Got some pictures of the event (although it was mostly a beer-tasting festival, don't worry, it was quite family-friendly and a ton of kids were there -- they just couldn't partake).

Saw Mysterious Skin

We just got back from seeing Mysterious Skin, which finally opened in Seattle. It is playing at one theater, with two showings. We saw the second one. About 40 people were there. I invited 11 people to go see it with us, but no one could make it -- too bad, that would have really increased the box office! Oh well, their loss -- really great acting from most of the performers, especially 3rd Rock guy. And of course, I always love Mary Lynn Rajskub. The guy who played Scott Heim as a teenager was creepily like Scott ...

Sold!

Bye bye, boat!

More on the boat

We may make the final sale on the boat today! Turns out, fixing the engines was a good thing! Of course, things might still fall through. We thought we had a sale last week, which would have ruined my plans to take some friends out on a weekend boat trip, but the potential buyer took a ride in the boat and the engine overheated! So, I figured it was lost, and we took the trip on the weekend anyway. Turns out, he had a mechanic look into it, and found out it was just a thermometer problem, so he wants to buy the boat again!

Just waiting for a call today from the boat broker, who is doing the final step, which is pulling the boat from the water so the buyer can get a look at the bottom paint and the engines, which should all be fine, I hope!

The Space Needle ties up traffic

I still sell my photos on Shutterstock.com, although I haven't posted any new ones in a while. For the longest time, my best-selling photo was of Seattle's 520 at night, at 20 purchases. Today, though, my picture of the Space Needle from Queen Anne Hill tied it at 20.

I personally like the traffic pic better, but whatever sells ...

The boat

We still haven't sold the boat. On the theory that this is partially due to the fact that it hasn't been able to start in months, I spent the day trying to get it going again. Turns out that we had three "house" batteries and no "starter" batteries, and all three house batteries were pretty dead, anyway. So I bought two starters and one house battery, and that did the trick!

Unfortunately, there was no time to take it out once I got it going, so I'm going to take it out next weekend.

My new job

I guess I can mention my newest job on the blog now (it was a secret for a while, kinda). I'm going back to development on mobile devices on a team called, believe it or not, MEAT (Mobile Experience Applications Team).

First project: "The next generation platform for maps and navigation on mobile devices." This is cool, because whenever I get bored with computers (as I am more and more often lately), Laurel says, "What else can you map on a phone?" and I find I can get interested again.

So, yeah, I was only on Windows Stationary for six months or so ... it's kind of like when I was on Windows ME (ugh) and was on the cut Activity Centers team, only to end up on Windows Mobile ... only this time without the cut and the pitstop on Windows Media Player!
