Just what sort of paperback was he writing?

I must have heard the Beatles doing "Paperback Writer" a million times (although, as it is a "Paul song," I'm not particularly interested in it) ... however, tonight I heard something new.

Of course, I'm too lazy to go find the CD and see if it is on there, or if this is just an artifact of the MP3 or something, but ...

About 57 seconds into the song, there is the sound of a woman, not exactly moaning, but taking a rather sharp breath.

You might mistake it for just one of the Beatles taking a breath for the next lyric, but then you hear it again at a minute and 46 seconds, and it is much more distinct.

And now that I listen more closely, you can hear it a bit at the very beginning of the song, too!

I couldn't find any references to this on a quick net search, but I didn't try too hard.

The version I'm listening to is from CD collection of Beatles singles, Past Masters, Vol. 2.

Hmmm....Beatles, Dave Stewart, Microsoft...are you the Dave Stewart from Oklahoma who went to KU J-School and then wowed em at Microsoft? Remember Regan from J-School? I'm happily living in Austin, Texas, working as a managing editor for powered.com, have become an actual songwriter (you can't live in Austin without catching the singer/songwwriter virus), have found my true love at last(took long enough, dang), wrote a book. Jsut got back from the big Winfield, KS bluegrass festival; a song I wrote about Dorothy, Kansas & Oz won first prize, go figure. In fact, Austin *is* my Oz, I think. Although "wowed em at Microsoft" is probably an overstatement.

I finally got around to listening to my copy on the Past Masters CD with a fairly expensive set of headphones.

There's definitely a barely-audible noise at 0:57, but it wasn't clear to me what it was. It didn't necessarily sound like an inhalation to me, just a voice.

At 1:46 there's definitely a sharp inhalation, sharper than you would normally expect for an accidental recording, but not necessarily a woman. This is followed about a second later by another unidentifiable voice-like noise and then an almost-inaudible, cut-off part of the chorus "..perback" at 1:48. Then the real chorus "paperback writer" comes back in at 1:51.

What it means, Idunno. Sounds like maybe some stuff they tried to erase.
